Photo I
This class is an introduction to digital photography. By the end of this term students should have met the following objectives:
Students are expected to go on at least one photo shoot per week taking a minimum of twenty photographs and will turn in Photo projects each week. Students may not use images taken by someone else (family, friend, or professional/online, etc.)
Website
Credit for projects is based on posting images to your Website/Weebly Blog. Each student will create a Blog to upload their work throughout the trimester. This digital portfolio will also provide opportunities for critiques, in addition to sharing work with friends and family. Each Blog is public, and students can determine how much personal information to provide. Students may decide to delete/alter their Blog after the duration of this class, but they will want to keep their Blog if there is a chance of pursuing further classes in Digital Photography (Photo II/III/AP)
Grading
Photo Check-In 20%
Students will be assigned each photography assignment one week prior to the due date. The following Monday students will bring assigned photographs to class. Each photo check-in is worth 5 points. Students will lose 2.5 points per day late and 2.5 points for photos taken in school. PHOTO-CHECKS can NOT BE made up.
Class Points 20%
Students receive points for In-class book assignments and daily work. Students are awarded 2 points for each day they come to class on time and prepared, and use their work time appropriately as deemed by the teacher. 5 weekly class points are deducted for playing computer games.
Projects 50%
Projects are expected to be worked on both in and out of the classroom, unless otherwise noted.
If images are taken in school, the project cannot earn higher than a grade of a B-.
Formal Assessments 10%
Students are required to critique each project in Photography, along with in-progress critiques discussing artwork among their peers. There is a cumulative Final Test in Photo I.
Classroom Guidelines/Expectations
Late work – Partial/Unfinished Work cannot be turned in for credit. Complete late work can be turned in until the end of each quarter. 2 point will be deducted for each day the assignment is turned in after the deadline.
Tardies – After receiving a fourth tardy students will be issued a detention or make-up work.
Lab fee – This class has a $15 lab fee. This money is used to buy ink and paper to print photographs.
Work Time – Students may use the Photography studio on most Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings to edit images, upload photos, and receive additional help on assignments. Please talk to your instructor for availability at least one day in advance. Any students signed up for art club may also use the lab on Wednesday/Thursday afternoons.
Video Games – Consequences for playing video games on the computer during class/SNAP might entail the following, but are not limited to: loss of daily points, deduction of points on current project, permission to work during SNAP, and further decision based upon the instructor’s discretion.
Plagiarism – Students are required to use their most current body of work and capture new digital images throughout the duration of the trimester. Students cannot use found images for their photo projects because these images belong to someone else. Any photo that has not been taken by the student artist will be considered plagiarism and will result in a zero for the project. In addition to digital images, students are expected to follow the guidelines when writing artist statements, summaries, research papers and any other classroom assignments.
All subject matter in any work created using STMA materials must follow appropriate content guidelines. More simply put: do not make anything that relates to or resembles in any way smoking, alcohol, nudity or drugs. Also, the following will NOT be considered for grading: Candles, Pop Cans, Household Decorations, and any Random Assortment of Objects on a Bed Table or Floor
STMA Art Camera Check-out Policy
Camera Equipment & Policy
Students are not required to use an STMA camera. Students can use any personal digital camera, including a camera phone, as long as the images can be uploaded to the computers in the Photography studio. If students wish to use a camera belonging to the STMA Art Department, the following guidelines are required in addition to parent and instructor consent.
- All fees must be paid in order to check out a camera.
Students enrolled in AP Studio Art and/or Photo II/III have priority for checking out a DSLR camera
-Cameras should be checked out after school and checked in the following morning before school begins
- Cameras need to be assigned and designated cards pinned to specific camera number on board
-Cameras should not be left in lockers during or after school
-Cameras should not be left in unattended vehicles
-Camera neck strap must be worn when camera is not in its bag
-Any damage, loss or theft to part or the entire camera will result in replacement fees
-All images must be uploaded at the time of camera check-in and immediately deleted off of the SD card
-It is the student’s responsibility to delete the images after checking out a camera
-Following the guidelines as stated in the student handbook, all students must receive permission of person(s) in the photo being captured at school. It is the student’s responsibility to review the media policy published in the student handbook
-Students must fill out the form to successfully check in the camera
*Any student who does not abide by these rules will lose their privilege of checking out a camera

- Use the Rules of Photography to create well-composed images.
- Learn and apply the elements and principles of design to photography.
- Develop an in-depth knowledge of Adobe Photoshop.
- Know the development and general history of photography.
- Gain a proper vocabulary of photography terms.
